NHL playoffs 2018 Jets find formula to solve Marc-Andre Fleury Vegas in Game 1 win

A resurgent Marc-Andre Fleury in this year's tournament, leading the Golden Knights into the Western Conference finals as the Conn Smythefront-runner andthe single most important player in this postseason. But his historic pace led some to wonder when regre sion would set in. The Jets solved the formula that eluded the Kings and Sharks before them in Friday's Game 1, beating Fleury for three rapid-fire goals onsix shots in the first period ( ) and clamped down late for a 4-2 win to begin the best-of-seven series. Dustin Byfuglien scored first 65 seconds into the game and Patrik Laine followed five minutes later, putting the Knights into a 2-0 hole for just the second time this postseason. Winnipeg's third goal, scored by Joel Armia7:35 into the game, initially was waved off for goaltenderinterference. Jets coach Paul Maurice challenged the ruling, and the call on the ice was overturned for the first review controversy in the Stanley Cup semifinals. GOLDEN STANDARD At the time, it felt like Vegas coach Gerard Gallant might pull Fleury. The Golden Knights came out flat. Fleury remained in the game, though, and Brayden McNabb responded 35 seconds later with a goal that tilted momentum away from the Jets. "We had a week off, too," Fleury said. "Sometimes getting your legs under you takes a few minutes, and they took advantage." Vegas initially set the tone in the second period, but Mark Scheifele'spower-play goal 9:35 in gave the Jets a 4-1 lead and set in motion the second phase of their gameplan: Clog the Ted Williams Jersey neutral zone to negate the speedy Knights' strength in transition. It worked, and Connor Hellebuyckturned aside 19 of the 21 shots they did manage. Blake Wheeler, who a sisted on three of the Jets' goals, and Scheifele(goal, a sist) are now tied for the active playoff points lead. Byfuglien'sgoal and a sist gave him 15 points in 13 games, leading all defensemen. And the Jets' lethal power play went 2 for 4 against the best penalty-killing team in the playoffs. But the key to the series remains Fleury. He entered with a pristine .951 save percentage, the best in NHL history for a goalie with at least 10 playoff starts, and shouldn't be faulted entirely for the lo s. Still, with four goals on 26 shots, it was his lowest single-game save percentage so far these playoffs (.846). Did you see the goals?" Gallant asked rhetorically before mounting a defense for Fleury."Hes the best goalie in the playoffs as far as Im concerned. And he will be. He needs to be.
